Introduction

The Department of Civil Engineering at Yeungnam University is committed to educate students with cutting-edge academics, practices, and interdisciplinary researches and services for our local and nation’s civil engineering industry as follows:

In particular, engineers in the construction field who graduated from Yeungnam University are earning a good reputation and acknowledgement for their job performance, devotion to their roles, and distinct sociability. In the Civil Engineering program, students are advised to choose the right career path based on their capability and aptitude. In addition, they are instructed to follow the systematic curriculum with writing undergraduate thesis that will help achieve their career goals. In order to enhance the quality of engineering education, our curriculum is operated and controlled under the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) system that provides professional recommendations and guidelines for undergraduate programs. By continuously updating academic contents and program directions, the Department of Civil Engineering is moving forward to meet the needs of rapidly changing industries and future innovations.

History

Currently, over 5,000 undergraduates, 400 master's and 60 PhDs graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering to play pivotal roles in the national development from various different social levels.

Job Fields

Civil engineers can be employed in various fields such as public corporations at national and provincial levels, central government or local authorities, engineering companies, construction companies, financial institutes, public policy research institutes at national and local levels, etc.
Students can acquire national engineer certifications such as civil engineer, measuring and topography space information engineer, industrial safety engineer, construction safety engineer, materials testing engineer, structural research engineer.

    GENERAL PHYSICS I
    Introduces classical mechanics. Space and time: straight-line kinematics; motion in a plane; forces and equilibrium; experimental basis of Newton's laws; particle dynamics; universal gravitation; collisions and conservation laws; work and potential energy; vibrational motion; conservative forces; inertial forces and non-inertial frames; central force motions; rigid bodies and rotational dynamics.

    SEMINAR FOR ACADEMIC LIFE
    1. Summary of the course This course is to assist university freshmen in CRM designing to adapt university life well through the instruction and counselling of supervising professor. (This course is composed of self analysis, personality type test, career research, instruction for the success of university life, career plan and direction setting, CRM designing method and CRM designing. The course should be teaching in classes of the students by supervising professor.) 2. Course objectives This course is to motivate the students before the mid term exam and provide students with self analysis, personality type test (MBTI or TCI) and career research (YAT test). Also, this course shall has a plan to instruct the students to enhance the efficiency of university life through career and time management. In addition, this course is to make a chance for the students to have practical assistance to university life by providing study method, report designing strategy and the information on academic system and various kinds of internal programs of the university. After the mid term exam, the students will be instructed to set the direction of career designing through continuous counselling of supervising professor and the students will be able to establish CRM designing and execution plan.

    SOCIAL CONTRIBUTION AND SERVICE
    This course is to cultivate community sense as members of society and the global village for students in order to develop the basic knowledge required as global citizens. Especially, this course is to foster the spirit of cooperation, sharing, service, and creativity and study the social contribution and leadership to solving the challenges the global community faces. As a liberal arts course, it is centered to nurture a leader having the global capability to contribute to community development through learning the knowledge and the case on the value & logic of social responsibility focused on environmental preservation, social contribution, and good governance(ESG). This course aims to foster a generous mind, learn knowledge and technology and build the capacity to contribute to building a society towards a safer and happier world through the study of theory and practice.

    SOFTWARE AND AI
    Software and AI (Artificial Intelligence) course aims to educate the basic concepts of software and computational thinking to use them in various applications. It allows students of various majors to experience the core technologies of the 4th industrial revolution, such as big data, machine learning, and AI. It also introduces various applications of AI so that students can easily apply these technologies to their field of study. This course classifies the lecture types into three categories, and adjust the lecture difficulty according to the student's academic ability.

    STATISTICS(1)
    This course defines events and probabilities, conditional probabilities and independence to evaluate probabilities. Elementary probability distributions such as binomial distribution, geometric distribution, Poisson distribution, and normal distribution are also introduced. The concepts of sample distribution of the statistic and the central limit theorem are introduced. The statistical inference including estimation and hypothesis testing of the mean and the standard deviation will be discussed.

    INTRODUCTION TO BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING
    Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a revolutionary approach to the design, construction, and management of buildings and infrastructure. BIM is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility, serving as a shared knowledge resource for information about it during its lifecycle.     Calculus(1) covers the following: Sequences, limits and continuity of functions of single variable, derivatives, properties of derivatives, differentiation rules, higher order derivatives, applications of derivatives, definite integrals, indefinite integrals, properties of integrals, integration rules, applications of integrals, infinite series power series.

    PYTHON PROGRAMMING
    The core competencies required in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution is the ability to come up with idea for solving a given problem and realize it in software. In this course, as the first step this, we will learn Python programming language. This course aims to cultivate basic programming skills and problem-solving skills based on creative thinking. The topics covered in this course are as follows. - Python language grammar (basic and advanced levels) - Python library for GUI programming (tkinter) - Python library for image processing (pillow) - Python libraries for data analysis (Matplotlib, Numpy, and Pandas)

    SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC ENGLISH
    The aim of the course is to help students increase their fluency and accuracy in English. The course will be co-taught by Korean and Native English instructors. Korean instructors will provide students with an opportunity to practice English structure, vocabulary, and expressions, and students will be encouraged to enhance their verbal skills by actively participating in classroom activities. Students will further practice expressing themselves in English with native English instructors.

    This course introduces basis of civil engineering, infrastructure, and construction industry. The course includes history of civil engineering and civil engineering disciplines such as planning, engineering, construction, and maintenance. It also provides basic introduction of civil infrastructures such as road, railway, airport, harbor, bridge, tunnel, water resource facilities, and environmental facilities.

    Mathematics for civil engineers including first and second order ordinary differential equations, matrices, linear algebra and vector calculus.

    CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT
    The construction activities need the methods of improving the quality, while at the same time reducing the costs. This subject consists of instruction period, cost, and quality managements.

    FLUID MECHANICS
    This lecture introduces the basic principles of fluid mechanics and analysis framework including physical characteristics of fluid, analysis basis for open channel flows and pipe flows such as Euler's equation to promote the basic knowledge regarding fluid mechanics.

    Lectures on the concept of stress and strain for tension, compression and shear, Hook's law, Mohr's circle, combined stress, strain energy, beams, columns, shafts and continuous beams, deflections, shear and moment diagrams, etc.

    SURVEYING & PRACTICE
    Surveying Practice is related to the course Elementary Surveying. Introduction to geometric geodesy. Least squares adjustments in surveying. The theory and use of surveying instruments. Traverse, Triangulation and area computation methods and surveying practice as they relate to elementary civil engineering applications. Applied surveying topics including construction surveying, highway geometric design and elementary photogrammetry.

    GEOGRAPHIC AND SPATIAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS
    This subject consists of elementary remote sensing, photogrammetry, and GIS. This subject will assist the student in more fully understanding the geospatial properties and characteristics, and applied computation of geographic data.

    This subject consists of highway history, kinds, planning, inventory survey, traffic volume, design of highway earth work, etc. This subject will assist the student in more fully understanding the planning, survey, design and construction of highway facilities.

    INTRODUCTION TO DISASTER MANAGEMENT ENGINEERING
    This course provides an understanding of climate change and the definition, causes, effects and types of natural disasters due to climate change, and study on how to reduce the damage caused by natural hazards through prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery to manage various natural disasters.

    Understanding and analysis of the hydrological cycle of water including precipitation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, and runoff.

    WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING
    This course offers comprehensive experience in the design and operation of sustainable municipal water system, including water pollution and environmental technologies, engineering calculations, reactions and reactors, water chemistry, water treatment processes, sludge treatment and management, and advanced treatment.

    APPLIED HYDROLOGY
    Analysis and management of surface water in watersheds for design rainfall estimation, hydrograph analysis and synthesis, hydrologic and hydraulic flood routing, water budget analysis and water resources planning, and hydrologic modeling techniques.

    SITE INVESTIGATION & SOIL TEST
    This course deals with the site investigation and laboratory tests on soils. The site investigation includes boring, sampling, standard penetration tests, cone penetration tests, pressuremeter test, vane tests, geophysical survey, etc. This course deals with the analysis method of results of site investigations. The laboratory tsests of permeability, oedometer, direct share, triaxial compression, compaction and CBR are experienced.

    This course provides design practice for municipal water and wastewater systems by covering engineering topics such as water use and wastewater generation, master planning of water and wastewater systems, water resources, water intake, pumps, water distribution networks, sewer system, and rainwater harvesting.
